How It all Started
Our History Like so many great ideas, 100 Women Who Care was conceived by a busy woman while she was doing 15 other things!
One day in 2006, Karen Dunigan, part of the executive leadership team at a family health center in Jackson, MI, learned that many mothers giving birth in a local hospital were taking their babies to homes without cribs. These infants were sleeping in boxes, dresser drawers or in their mothers’ beds. Some of these babies didn’t survive the night. For $10,000, the hospital could purchase the mattresses, blankets and cribs they needed. Karen got to work.
She knew she could call upon 100 women who would each give $100. At that first meeting, in one hour, a group of Karen’s friends heard the story and each wrote checks resulting in a $12,800 donation, more than requested, to supply new mothers with the simplest need: a crib. Karen recognized that she was on to something special.
She founded the first 100+ Women Who Care chapter and scheduled quarterly meetings. The rules were simple: any member could present a need in the community, the need had to be immediate and the money had to remain local.
We are each strong in our own right, but together we are stronger. Karen realized that when 100 or more people come together, each person becomes a powerful force for doing good.
